NDC (New Deal for Communities) commissioned the expertise of Progressive Educational Tools to conduct a 12 week programme to get a number of NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training) into long term and sustainable work. There were a number of barriers to overcome as some of the young people had been out of the education system for a long time, had no qualifications, and many had never had a job. Some of the cohort had also been on the wrong side of the law at times.
The aim was for them to move on to positive destinations at the end of the programme, which needed to deliver accredited learning in a fun and dynamic way that would encourage the young people to turn their lives around and engage with work or further training, and make decisions to better themselves.
Our Solution
Using our approach of drawing a line under the past, we created a unique blend of work experience, enterprise and qualifications. The young people worked with the team at PET on a programme that encouraged engagement with the local community, developed skills for life and for work and most important of all – was fun!
The young people created a company called “Network People” and hosted their own high profile event. Working with our trainers were a variety of high profile business people and young entrepreneurs who were able to help the young people to build their confidence and look to a new future. They were our colleagues who did not leave us until they had found their way in the world.
Each young person achieved a 12 week work placement after the course, as well as their three Wider Key Skills at Level 1 (equivalent to 56.4 points). One of the group, Kim Hastings, received a placement with Regeneration Services at Coventry City Council and has subsequently accepted a permanent position. She has completed an apprenticeship and been nominated for a Council award for her hard work and dedication.
